Dual ultrasonic/passive infrared flash flood sensor

Flash floods are the most common natural disaster worldwide. In the USA, floods cause more casualties than any other natural disaster.

Since most of the casualties are due to the lack of proper flood information, we developed and tested a new type of flash flood sensor based on the combination of an ultrasonic rangefinder with multiple passive infrared thermopiles. Two sensors have been validated over a one year deployment in western Saudi Arabia, which included an actual minor flash flood event, which was detected by both sensors. No false detection was recorded over the testing period. This sensor can also simultaneously monitor traffic flow (using the same ultrasonic/passive infrared sensor combination), making it an attractive solution for smart cities.
